Is Teak a Good Wood for Decking? 3 Benefits

Teak decks are water-resistant by nature

Teak wood decking contains natural oils that help it repel moisture.

That means fewer worries about rot or swelling after a storm.

Teak wood handles heat and cold like a pro:

Gauteng’s weather can be unpredictable. Teak doesn’t crack or warp easily, even with those temperature swings.

Teak wood is low-maintenance charm

It starts out golden-brown and slowly fades into a soft silver-grey. You don’t have to do much to keep it looking good.

Janka hardness: ~1,000 lbf

Density: ~655 kg/m³

Moisture content: naturally low, which helps prevent expansion and contraction

How Do You Maintain Teak Decking?

Teak is famously low-maintenance. But a little care goes a long way.

Here’s a simple routine:

  • Monthly sweep: Clear away leaves and debris to prevent staining.
  • Seasonal wash: Use a soft brush and mild soap. No harsh chemicals needed.
  • Optional oiling: If you want to keep the golden hue, apply teak oil every 6–12 months.
  • Annual inspection: Check for loose boards or signs of wear—especially after heavy rains.

No sanding. No sealing. No stress.

FAQ for Teak Decks

  • Yes—but gently.

Teak can handle pressure washing, but it’s best to use a low-pressure setting (under 1,500 PSI) and a wide-angle nozzle. High pressure can strip away the natural oils and roughen the surface.

Here’s how we recommend doing it:

    1. Rinse with water first.
    2. Use a teak-safe cleaner if needed.
    3. Pressure wash gently, keeping the nozzle at least 30 cm away.
    4. Let it dry fully before walking or applying oil.

If you’re unsure, we offer professional cleaning services to restore your deck safely.

  • Good news: teak is naturally termite-resistant. Its dense grain and high oil content make it unappealing to most wood-boring insects.

That said, no wood is completely immune. If your property has a history of termite activity, our decking team recommends you:

    • Installing a termite barrier under the deck
    • Keeping surrounding soil dry and well-drained
    • Scheduling annual inspections

We also offer optional termite treatment during installation—just to be safe.

  • This is one of the most common questions we get. And the answer depends on your style.

    • Love the rich, golden-brown look? Then yes—oiling every 6 to 12 months will help preserve that warm tone.
    • Prefer the natural silver-grey patina? No oiling needed. Just let it age gracefully.

Oiling doesn’t affect durability. It’s purely about appearance.

We use teak-specific oils that soak in deep without leaving a sticky surface.

And if you change your mind later?

You can always clean and re-oil to bring back the original colour.
